My birthday present from employees of Microsoft Research China

Ubiquitous White Boards

Whenever we had visitors at Microsoft Research China, they said to us, “How come you have so many white boards here? Even the top of the coffee table is a framed white board!”

I created a white board culture based on my Carnegie Mellon experience. In 1983, Professor Reddy and I often drafted our ideas on a white board during our discussions. I found it the best way for engineers to communicate.

The white board culture of Microsoft Research China represented open-mindedness. It treated all the staff members as equals, let them express whatever thoughts they had, and allowed them to make mistakes, which could be easily erased. It also symbolized teamwork, inviting staff members to brainstorm as a team.

Ya-Qin was as much of a white board fan as I was. Before he came on board, he asked me for a big white board in his office.

I said I would give him a 14-meter-wide white board, but later I realized my metric system math was flawed. Ya-Qin ended up with one four meters wide. Then he often jokingly said to me, “You owe me 10 meters!”

To maximize the effect of the white board culture, I designed “white-board coffee tables.” Each tabletop had an inlay of white board. Even a round tabletop had an inlaid white board in the same shape. Visitors often said they had never seen a round tabletop white board.
